Everyone who would rather make beautiful things than deal with admin. Whether you're a DJ or a painter, we take the work off your hands and make sure your bookkeeping just runs itself.

Designers
From logos to complete brand identities: you invoice per project or on retainer, often to clients abroad too. We make sure VAT reverse-charging with EU clients is handled correctly and that your software and equipment costs (Adobe, iMac, drawing tablet) are optimally deducted. Benefit: never wonder again whether your foreign invoice is correct.
Photographers
From wedding shoots to commercial work: your revenue varies by season and by job. We process your equipment costs (cameras, lenses, licenses) automatically through the app, so you never miss a deduction on your gear. Benefit: always insight into your margin per job, even in a quiet month.
Freelance marketers
Do you work for international clients or through platforms like Upwork? Then you'll deal with VAT reverse-charging and ICP declarations. We automatically link your invoicing to your bookkeeping, so cross-border assignments never cause problems. Benefit: you forward your invoices, we take care of a correct tax return.
Illustrators
Whether you work with clients, licenses, or your own merchandise: each income stream requires different VAT treatment. We keep your admin organized and advise you on the investment deduction for new equipment or software. Benefit: more time for your work, less puzzling over receipts.
Tax check

Free freelancer tax check

Are you a creative maker, but does it feel like your admin has become a creative project of its own? Many freelancers in the creative sector leave thousands of euros on the table every year because they don't make optimal use of tax schemes, or they risk fines due to unclear VAT rules with foreign clients.

Sophy & Co. takes a free look with you at your numbers in 15 minutes.

What do we check for you?

  • Software & hardware: Are you correctly deducting all your Adobe subscriptions, gear, and that new MacBook? We also check whether you're entitled to the KIA (investment deduction).
  • International VAT: Do you work for clients outside the Netherlands (or through platforms like Upwork)? We check whether you're handling VAT reverse-charging and your ICP declarations correctly.
  • Hours criterion & deductions: Are you hitting the 1,225 hours for the self-employed deduction? We look at how to make your hours registration audit-proof without interrupting your creative flow.
  • KOR check: Is the small businesses scheme (KOR) a blessing or a curse for you? We calculate whether you should reclaim VAT or whether the exemption is more advantageous.

The result:
Within fifteen minutes, you'll know whether your admin is in good shape and where you can save on tax right away. No complicated reports, just honest advice from a specialist who understands you'd rather create than do bookkeeping.

What we can do specifically for your creative business

As a freelancer, you're usually considered a business for VAT purposes. You charge 21% VAT on top of your hourly rate or project price. You pay this VAT to the Dutch Tax Administration every quarter. The big advantage? You can deduct the VAT you pay on your business purchases (laptop, camera, software, office supplies). That way, you get that 21% back on your investments right away.

This is a common question for creatives who work internationally.

  • Within the EU: You usually reverse-charge the VAT to your business client. You then invoice at 0% VAT and note “VAT reverse-charged” on the invoice. You do need to include your client's VAT number.
  • Outside the EU: In many cases, you don't charge Dutch VAT.
Sophy & Co. helps you set this up correctly the first time in your invoicing, so you never run into problems with the ICP declaration.

At Sophy & Co., we don't believe in billing by the hour where the meter starts running the moment you ask a question. For a fixed fee starting from €49 per month, you get your full admin, VAT returns, and income tax sorted as a designer. Including access to our smart app, where you can upload your receipts in 2 seconds. You often earn this back directly through the tax benefits we claim for you.

Yes, equipment you use for business is deductible. For purchases above €450 (excl. VAT), this is usually done through depreciation; smaller purchases can often be deducted all at once. You may also qualify for the investment deduction (KIA). We check this for you when setting up your admin.

This is a grey area that the Dutch Tax Administration checks closely. In most cases, a workspace in a rented or owned home is not deductible, unless it has its own entrance and bathroom. However, the furnishings (your desk, ergonomic chair, monitor) are often deductible as a business investment. We check exactly what's possible in your situation during the free scan.

The small businesses scheme (KOR) is useful if your annual revenue stays under €20,000 and you mainly work for private individuals. You then don't need to charge VAT, but you also can't reclaim it on your new gear. We calculate for you whether it's better to opt in or out of the KOR for maximum benefit.
